ARTIST TALK:: MELINDA HOTHO

Artist Melina Hotho I am not one to initiate a hug when meeting someone for the first time.  However, Melinda Hotho’s warm and inviting energy compelled me to instantly give her a huge hug! Melinda’s desire to promote this same kind of positive energy for those who wear her one-of-a-kind necklaces, earrings and bracelets is reflected in her choice of beautiful materials.  Melinda elaborates on this idea and shares a little more about herself below.

What do you enjoy most about making jewelry?

There are endless creative possibilities when making jewelry.  It’s such a good outlet….and it’s great therapy.

What jewelry making techniques do you use?

I mostly use wire wrapping techniques right now but I look forward to learning how to wield metal soon.

Where do you find inspiration for your pieces?

Sometimes I dream about a piece that I would like to make.  But often I’ll see a necklace or a pair of earrings that someone is wearing and I’ll be inspired to create something similar with my own spin.

What are some of your favorite stones to use?

Labradorite, Moonstone, Aquamarine and Apatite are my four favorite stones right now. Apatite can be used to enhance the energies of other crystals and stones. Having apatite near you can bring harmony on all levels, and inner peace.  Aquamarine , provides shielding for the aura, and is said to bring in angels for their guidance and protection.  Labradorite increases intuition, psychic development, esoteric wisdom, helps with subconscious issues, and provides mental illumination.  Moonstone is a stone that can help with clearing and bringing in uplifting energies.

What some other creative activities you have enjoyed?

I love jewelry making workshops and my next workshop will teach me how to shape metal.   I also enjoy parties where you drink wine and paint with friends; I’ve taken a few gourmet cooking classes, and pottery workshops.   I spent a week in Colorado learning how to faux finish walls and that was so much fun.

You are also a Reiki healer.  What led you to pursue this healing modality?

I feel drawn to many kinds of energy healing.   What I really appreciate about Reiki is that it offers distance healing, so you can send healing energy to anyone in need.  Reiki always knows what needs to be healed.

Tell us about the smudging kits you design?

To honor the American Indian heritage on my mother’s side, I started making feather fans for smudging using humanely harvested feathers, soft leather, waxed cord and gemstones.  I package the feather fans with other items needed for smudging such as smudge sticks, shells and smudging instructions.

Who is your favorite artist?

Dana Kellin and Olena Tkaczuk are two of my favorite jewelry designers. They both use high quality stones, precious metals and lots of wire wrapping.

What are some of your favorite places in Austin?

Town Lake trail, Barton Creek Greenbelt, Alamo Draft House, Lick Ice Cream, Barley Swine restaurant are a few Austin favorites.

I want to thank Melinda for sharing her thoughts and inspirations with us.  Visit blueZelia to see more of her beautiful jewelry collection.
