Adrian and I had no idea where we were headed when we left the house this past Saturday night. We pointed the car toward downtown, deciding to be tourist in our own city.
We first stopped at an interesting looking restaurant on East 6th street. The building’s modern design and minimalist attitude was immediately appealing. Oddly, we couldn’t find a sign anywhere. After a bit of searching, we finally saw the little silver letters announcing the restaurant as Qui. I instantly recognized the name and in that same instance knew there wasn’t a chance in hell we’d be seated in Paul Qui’s new restaurant before midnight…turns out I was pretty close to right. It was packed! We opted out, but I have to say, the staff was amazingly friendly, encouraging us to try back another time. We made our way to Bangers, one of our favorite places for a casual dinner.
Later, while in pursuit of a dessert to share, we happened upon a musician playing in front of Austin Rocks and immediately knew we were listening to someone special.
Ruby Jane, a 17 year-old songwriter, guitar and fiddle playing prodigy already has a resume that many musicians would aspire to over a lifetime. She is the youngest fiddler to ever be invited to the Grand Ole Opry. She has toured and performed with Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Big and Rich, Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Blues Traveler, Mark O’Connor, and Asleep at the Wheel just to name a few.
As always, Austin delivered on its reputation as one of the best entertainment cities in the country!
