I could see the dog sniffing around the mail box. No chain, no electric fences and I knew exactly what I had to do. I had to stop running and be ready. As expected, the dog saw me and started barking and lunging toward me. This is a familiar scene for a runner. Over the years it has played out many times and every time I use the same tactic to save myself from being bitten. I stop running, smile, and talk sweetly. Basically I am kind. This has worked without fail.
This approach seems to work for all creatures; dogs, cats…humans. The act of genuine kindness speaks a universal language that breaks down barriers and removes fear. The Dalai Lama speaks wisely when he says, “My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.” ― Dalai Lama XIV.
